This programme explores borrowing and
inspiration- So we have Byrd and Bull, good solid Tudor era
composers- and then two centuries later, the use of the same
Dance forms by Howells. Howells does not just write a pavan or
galliard - he uses Ralph Vaughan WiIliams as an inspiration- so
we can hear the Renaissance dance and the harmonies of the much
later Vaughan Williams. Through Kodaly and Bartok, English ear
training has found a new inspiration. We hear Bach, who
influenced Bartok, Arne (the 'English Scarlatti') and a bit of Handel, who’s Englishness is, of
course, borrowed. |
